00s Paintings

In this series of works, influenced by pre-Islamic and post-Islamic Iranian art, one can see a merge of the two eras in each piece. Islamic art motifs like floral pattern tiles and miniature clouds sit next to exquisite Sassanid metal works. A historical reminder that art stands out regardless of dramatic shifts in the political and socio-economical status of each society. Here artist takes inspiration from the Apadana palace at Persepolis which was the largest building on the Terrace at Persepolis built in the 6th century BC by Darius I (1000 square meters). Its roof was supported by 72 massive columns, each 24 meters tall hand-carved stone. Each column has been decorated with capitals consisting of two heads of bulls or lions. The entire Apadana palace was destroyed in 331 BC by the army of Alexander the Great. Here blue tiles are representing the Islamization of Iran which did not occur till 850 AD. The emergence of mosques and holy shrines drew artists to create massive tile works adorning towers (Menar) and domes (Gonbad) of these holy courts.
